The Drawing Collections of the Sforza Castle in Milan
Nowadays, the Gabinetto dei Disegni of the Sforza Castle holds over thirty thousand works on paper from the 15th to the 20th century which include designs, figurative studies, and architectural and ornamental projects.
Among the masterpieces are works by Leonardo da Vinci, Tiepolo, Appiani, Previati, Boccioni, Modigliani and significant core collections such as that of the architect Luca Beltrami.
This very first Guide traces the Gabinetto’s backstory, from its 19th-century origins to the most recent developments, through the figures who shaped the institute – from Carlo Vicenzi and Giorgio Nicodemi to Mercedes Garberi – to bring us this unique civic collection which continues to grow and reinvent itself.
A journey into the graphic memory of the city, among tales of collectors, artists and institutions who have all chosen to share that most essential form of art, drawing.
